We were given a reading week this week and all students decided to go into college anyway to do some more independent study work - getting some of our essays and portfolio work done while also finishing up on some special effects practical work. Thankfully I didn't need to do anything more on my special effects practical work so I decided to do some personal portfolio work and do a 60's mod look on fellow student Katie.
I was very inspired by this image of Dorit Kemsley and this Barbie type hairstyle with the high pony, combed over fringe and then the flicked out ends of the hair. So I decided to try and replicate that and do also do a 60's twiggy inspired makeup to go along with it. Due to my models hair being quite short and me not having the hair extensions in Her colour: I decided to do a half up half down hairstyle with this and section the top half into a pony tail and the second half to just hang free below and I planned to blend these 2 sections together later. I firstly sectioned a side part and then following that down to the ear before then moving that out the way and making it separate from the rest of the hair that would be pulled into the pony. Then pulling that into the high pony and taking a section to then wrap around the bobble and pin the end out of the way. Following this I then took that first section at the front and laid it across the forehead slightly creating that swoop fringe similar to the picture above. I then pinned those ends under the ponytail at the back of the head. I also used a strong hold hairspray to hold that shape in place and pick up all the fly away pieces of hair at the front of the hairline. Then curling the ends of the top pony tail and the bottom half of the hair that I left down with a straightener slightly curling the ends of the hair; replicating the image above.
Moving onto the makeup I firstly started out by applying a even base application of foundation before then adding cream contour and foundation stick as a full coverage concealer to highlight the high points of the face before then using a small amount of foundation to blend them all together. Now setting that with a pressed power in the highlight sections of the face, and a small amount of loose power on the contour areas before then going in bronzer and contour powers to strengthen these areas. I then also take a light 'flamingo shade' pink eyeshadow and use that as blush before then veiling powder over that to dull down the harshness of the pigment. I then used a brow soap to stick the brow hairs up in shape before then carving the brow with an eye primer before then going in and starting the eye look.
I originally wanted to do more of a modern twist with this black eye look blending a pencil out with a black shadow and adding glitter but I decided against that half way through the process of mapping out the eye. I started out by sketching the eye with a black eyeliner pencil and mapped out my outer wing before then doing my dots with the eye open to ensure that the shape was correct before then following the dots in a line to create the crease effect. After this was when I decided to keep it fairly clean cut and just apply a white eyeshadow onto the eyelid inside of the black shape on the eye - keeping it true to the 60's makeup look. Now using a gel white eyeliner I will paint that into the waterline to give that harsh 60's look before then using a black gel eyeliner and following that line underneath that and on the top lash line.
Now moving onto the lips I lined with a pink nude shade before then using a coral pink lipstick on the lips. I finished off the look with mascara and a small simple lash before then getting the model into costume and taking photos. I really enjoyed this look as it had the period accuracy that I need to tick off my range while also having some weight to the look rather than something more simple like other period looks.
