Week 11 Reflection - HNC

This reflection is an amalgamation of my last day at college during term 1 and the work that I had done over the Christmas holidays.

Finally on the last day of term 1 I had finished off all practical work and printed off all of my unit 25 work, essays and other documents to place into my flip portfolio. After this was done we all had a socially distanced Christmas gathering and celebrated the end of term. As far as practical work goes over the winter break I decided to enter a couple competitions: unfortunately I did not win either of them however I did receive a lipstick Christmas gift from a makeup company.

As a thank you I did decide to do a festive red loom to accompany the lipstick and post about this on my Instagram saying thank you and appreciation. The other competition I entered was the “Warpaint: Naughty or Nice” Winter completion. As mentioned previously I did not win that one either however I did have a lot more creative freedom and fun with this look. I had decided to also style a wig to go along with this. Using size 28mm and 40mm rollers. After setting these with my steamer and makeshift wig oven using a box and hairdryer: I then brushed out the curls using a Denman D3 brush - this

brushed out the waves super nice. I originally wanted to replicate something similar to a wig style I had done previously a couple weeks back which was a curly high pony with waves at the front and curled pieces. After setting I decided to go for more of a drag combed over Marcel wave, this did cause some issues when trying to line up the curls in the hair, I did get through the issue however by using duck bill sectioning clips and strong freeze spray.

When it came to the makeup I was feeling the idea of doing a strong impressionable drag look to try and wow the competition judges so I decided to do brow cover and just blend my eyeshadow up higher. In keeping with the wig I decided to go for blue eyeshadow look with some gems I had left over from a previous look. I had some large sheet pieces of gems from the gypsy shrine and from these I decided to take the sheets apart piece by piece and use eye makeup remover to remove the adhesive from the back fo them. As mentioned before I used blue shadows, creating a super dark gradient downwards using navy and black shadows. I then decided to take a black kohl pencil and sketch out a winged cut crease and attach it to what would be my eyeliner wing. Then using eye makeup remover and a cotton bud, I removed all of the eye base and shadow from the lid before then using white eyeshadow primer topped with a white shadow to create a stark white look. From this I then sketched in my eyeliner and completed my under eye before then placing on my gems. I did these all 1 by 1 and placed them symmetrically from 1 eye to another using lash glue on the end of a brush and using tweezers to pick up the gems.

From here I then used heavy foundation, highlighting and contouring with cream products before then blending them out in a flawless base. Now setting that all down with a translucent powder I then went in with a bronzer and contour to further deepen my contouring before then using magenta eyeshadows (matte and shimmer) for my blush. I used these same eyeshadows before for my Marie Antoinette inspired drag look and it was very successful hence I was very confident with this colour choice. From here I then placed a darker foundation down may neck and décolletage to match my contour and deep shadows of my makeup before then applying my wig and lashes. I decided to leave the lips until the end as I knew that they would not last long as due to my lack of colourful lipstick colours: I decided to use and eye base and the same eyeshadow powders that i had used in the eyeshadow to make it all cohesive. after this I then took all of my photos ensuring to follow the competition guidelines.

I would like to say that I am very happy with the outcome and it is unfortunate that i did not win the competition however I am very glad that this look is included in my professional portfolio. Showing off my professional skills of transformation as a makeup artist, wig artist and even as a drag artist using intense makeup application techniques and pulling off a flawless finish.
