Week 13 Reflection - HNC

Today was our second lesson of our online learning. As our practical tutor couldn’t get on the call last week we had a practical demo including our Medieval hair demo. However during our morning theory session we talked about our unit 2 assignment which was first delivered in term 1 however was quite brief. Here we went into more depth and talked about our ideas and plans for the project. As I do my weekly blog posts I have found that I have a decent amount of work already put together for this unit and so when asked I shared one of my blog posts with the group and talked about my content. After seeing other students content I then realised that it would be beneficial for me to then do a section where I set a goal or a task to be completed by the next week so that is something I will implement into my reflection blog posts from now on. We then moved onto a knowledge skills and behaviours presentation and talked about what we thought KSB meant and then discussed what they actually were. Then discussing the implement of these and what affect they have on working in industry. Our tutor then delivered a new tracking document to track our progress with our work while also then setting mini targets for ourselves.

Into the afternoon session now, we were then shown a medieval hair demo of what some medieval upper class women would wear their hair like. We also then had a little background research where we talked about the fact that it was against the church to wear makeup so they didn’t wear much - a tiny bit of blush if they did wear any. As we talked about this further I then decided to get my wig out and do some work with that. Due to Covid And the currently education lockdown restrictions I am having to style wigs with the resources that I have at home. I am quite lucky that I have all the materials to compete these looks and be happy with the finished result.

I first got my lace fronted wig and blocked it into the head Block. Prior to a previous style there was a lose curl in the wig which helped me to start with . I firstly sections the hair around the ears with a centre part and moved the 2 front sections of hair out the way. After this I then took the top back half section of hair to Create my 2 plaits to form my bun. I did a classic plait on both sides and secured them with clear elastics. From here I also found them that the soft curl that was in the hair wasn’t too strong and the back and wasn’t exactly what I wanted so with the help and advice if my tutor I plaited the bottom back section and

steamed that to give it a crimped curled look. Due to the hair being synthetic fibre I was able to set it by using steam. From this I then took a black donut and then pinned that just below the crown of the head before then wrapping my 2 upper plaits around that covering the donut as best as I could. From here I then took those 2 sections from the front and then took them down to then do some rope braids at the front to connect to the bun at the back. Still keeping in mind that centre parting; I took 2 sections from the front and did some rope braids connecting to the bun at the back. I did this by taking the section and splitting it in 2 vertically before then winding the right hand piece clockwise and then placing it over to the left hand side and repeating this - ensuring to keep my tension so it stayed. After doing this on both sides and securing it with an elastic I then at attached it to the bun as well. After this I experimented with the idea of adding ribbon to add some texture but I had some trouble with wrapping it around it so I think that is something I need to work on. I think it was more trying to replicate what I did on the right side to the left side and still have the ribbon look pretty. I think if I had some thinner ribbon it would have worked better. After this I then placed a black hair net over the bun as that’s what they would have done. Following this I then released the plaits that I had steamed and it had turned into this nice crimped hair which matched what I found in my research. I would say that it went very well as I don’t have too much experience with take up as well as this I had never done a rope braid before. To work on I would say the ribbon as well as speed as I felt that I could have done it a lot faster but I was talking to my tutor and other students on a call while doing it.

For this week I think as I have finished my wig I want to mainly focus on trying to finish the first learning objectives on both of my essays being Unit 21 and Unit 31 and then maybe start a little more preparation to what look I want to do for my medieval assessment using the wig I styled today.
