This week was pretty much the same as the last week; we were tasked with just continuing out unit 21 and unit 31 essays and portfolios and asked to keep working at them over the half term. It was also the due week for the Valentine’s Day competition and I will talk more about my completed look later on in the post.
In the afternoon we had guest speaker Tanya Noor who is a respected artist in the field and currently is the head designer for The Phantom of the Opera on the west end! It was a great experience to see some of the behind the scenes pictures of the wigs, costumes, as well as some of the SFX pieces used by her on the phantom. Due to copyright however I do not have access to any photos and can only describe them from memory. She also did a little ageing demo which was very realistic and was very well done, using only grease paints and latex sponges which was cool to see. With a proper costume and wig it would’ve looked incredible. She is also the CEO and created of the Get set go clear bags which have been replicated by many companies and are in many MUA’s kits now.
Now onto my valentines look. I talked a bit about my valentines look last week and my general ideas and wishes of what to do with my look and so I will talk you though my look. I started out with this my blonde lace front used in my week 15 blog post for my Judas look and I had curled it using green flocked rollers and I felt that the wig was just too long to do anything with. Originally I wanted to create a nice bridal curled updo and planned to do a bride gone wrong, upset idea however after trying to lay the hair on some padding I had made it did not work. In a fit of Frustration i decided to hack away at the blonde wig and did honestly make a bit of a mess off it: however I am going to think of it like club cutting and just got rid of the bulk hair lol. I firstly then steamed it all straight then went in and cut layers into the wig before then resetting it with those green rollers again, however making sure to have a side part with the rollers. With this short style I intended to do a Marilyn style, short bouncy curled hairdo however when I started to brush out the curls I saw the wig went into a different direction.
I ended up doing my usual love and favourite hairstyle which are like 20’s finger wave/Marcel wave that has been very popular since around 2015 in the Drag community. I think it was the wigs worn by Miss Fame on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7 that really inspired me to get into wigs and drag makeup. Anyway I decided to use my Denman D3 brush and brush out the curls all the way around the head and start to form the waves with the help of some duck bill clips. I then also pulled up the front section a bit to add volume before then spraying it with hairspray and freezing it with a blowdryer. Without waffling on anymore this is basically the style I came up with and decided to do for my look.
Now onto the makeup: I decided to stick with the vintage theme around the 20’s and do a very Marlena Dietrich‘s thin brow with a very dramatic eye look. And so for this the first thing was to glue my brows down before then colour correcting and covering with foundation and powder. On top of here I then started to think, I decided to take inspiration from Jessica Rabbit mixed with a more sad eye and brow so I made these huge eyelids and made a super dark dramatic pink/fuscia to black with then having a coppery topaz shimmer shadow on the new eyelid that I had constructed. To then balance out the huge eyelid, I decided to extend the lower lash line down with some white liner under the eyes to add drama. I then paired this with a very deep bronze and contour before then adding some cute blush and a pink/red lip while also using some of the same eyeshadows that I used on the eye on the edge of the lip to pull it all together.
I am absolutely in love with this look overall: I think that the wig and the makeup don’t necessarily go together 100% but I think the theme and idea go well together and the vintage idea comes through. I am hoping that I win the competition within the level 4 group. After posting it on my social media page as well I was contacted by NYX Cosmetics and was asked if they could use my image for their website page which was an incredible surprise and accomplishment for me as an artist to be recognised by them.
