Week 18 Reflection - HNC

Todays session was like the usual ones where we firstly go into the session and discuss what we have been up to over the last week. I had discussed that I had been constantly working away at my Unit 31 period presentation and had been struggling a little with my Unit 21 essay; specifically the third learning objective. We then went on to discuss my issue and see if anyone else had the same problem, which they did. So with this group discussion we talked about what we inferred and thought it was asking and then what we actually needed to write in the LO. I think with COVID in general it has thrown a lot of things out with the course, obviously none of this could have been predicted or prevented on our end as students and college but I think that we have definitely struggled with Unit 21 and Unit 22 essays as we have not had enough, if not any experience working in theatre and practicing these communication skills and drawing on life experiences. So I can say personally that I am really struggling with this essay. When drawing on life experiences I am drawing back to what I experienced during my Unit 25 medical simulation event that we did over at Worksop however for this essay in particular it talks about communication as a team and as this was not a team effort type of practical assessment; we are having to make some white lies. Moving onto another update from my last blog post; we got the competition results. I unfortunately did not win the competition however I am super proud to say that I did come second and have a certificate and lovetoshop voucher kindly given by college for my triumph. I was extremely happy as I explained in my week 17 blog post and my hard word definitely paid off. We also discussed the competition in the meeting also and we were all co,,need on our efforts and for the hard work and looks that we did. The judges felt that my wig work was tremendous and that is definitely my specialist area that I should go into which is a relief to hear as that is the area that I want to specialise in. Onto the afternoon I decided to work a little more on my Unit 31 and started to look at some research and fill out some of my information for my Roman Empire section. I also decided to start working on my wig for this section, this somewhat went to plan however I am really not happy with my results. The wig that I have used is very inexpensive and because of this, the synthetic fibres are possibly the cheapest I have come across and it is not what I thought it would be when buying. Along with this, when placing it on my head; the cap looks misshapen and the hair looks so thin and dry when worn. Because of this I am debating whether to purchase another wig to style. Onto the makeup I started to do some research into this and started to play about and practice what eye look I wanted to do. I took inspiration from the 1962 film Cleopatra and looked at the makeup worn by Elizabeth Taylor and tried to replicate that with the resources I had. From my research I also found that the Egyptians used crushed/powdered malachite mixed with animals fats or vegetable oils to make this eyeshadow paste which they wore on their eyes. A couple months ago I bought some liquid eyeshadows from Beauty Bay and had actually purchased a colour and when I checked the shade name, it was actually called Malachite! This really made me excited to play around with this item and create a cleopatra inspired look. I started out by sketching in that thick liner that Elizabeth Taylor wore and then quite hap-hazardly slapping that colour across the lid and I really was not a fan of this. I then looked more into some more modern recereations and came across a couple images which insprired me. I then decided to do the same liner shape, add some brown transition colours in the crease but have more precision when placing the malachite colour down. I felt that this was definitely more of an improvement from the first look however I felt it needed more. From here I then took another one of those Beauty Bay liquid eyeshadows in a topaz colour and then placed that on an angled brush and followed the liner I had placed under the eye. I thought this looked great, so I decided to add more! I added another black line under this but made sure not to add that to the cat eye shape I had already made with the first lot of liner. I loved the outcome of this. From here I did feel that the lid was lacking something however instead of adding more I decided to pause and add a false lash, I always say that a look is never complete without a lash in some cases. In this case I was correct - the false lash added that detail that I wanted to the eye and worked so well in completing the look I felt.

Above you can see the image of the eye look that I created, I am so happy with the way it turned out, I think that the green malachite colour glistened beautifully and goes great with my eye colour, I think that the brown transition shades could be a little neater as I feel it borders on muddy a little however I think it looks great. I did also take other photos with the wig on however due to reasons discussed above, I will not be posting those here haha. Between now and next weeks session I hopefully plan to get Unit 21 finished and submitted and hopefully be carrying on and starting to wrap up and finish some sections from my Unit 31 portfolio project. I think I will definitely be looking around for a new wig to purchase as I am very displeased with my current one however we are working with what we already have at home so I can't expect my looks to be outstanding.
