Week 23 Reflection - HNC

Finally we closed out Term 2 this week by finally handing in our Unit 31 portfolios with essay and all other necessary documents as well as essay for unit 2. I feel that the main focus of my blog posts this term have been to do with Unit 31 and so I will mainly discuss that. Overall I ended up doing around 25,000 words total for the entire project; essay and portfolio. I had completed all 7 required looks - most of which were done to the best of my ability with not many resources and I think some looks were better than others. As mentioned throughout my individual evaluations for each era within the project; I think my main downfall was constantly working on myself and having to use what clothes and resources I had to try and create my looks without breaking the bank by ordering all new wigs and costumes to only use them once. I think however there is a cohesive flow throughout my portfolio and I am glad that I was prepared and did create some period looks earlier on in term 1 (see blog posts 'Reading Week' and 'Week 5 Reflection') My submission for Unit 2 was simply a formative for the essay part of this Unit as we will mainly focus on this more in term 3 - the final term of the year before then progressing onto HND. I feel that this term we really did not focus on the written side for either unit 21 or unit 2 and so I have really struggled with these written elements this term. It was also quite frustrating as I have discussed throughout the blog posts of term 2 that being in college has had a real impact on my college work attitude and has really unmotivated me. I think the mix of all of these setbacks has really made me not enjoy this term as a whole and I look forward to being on site next term. I will say however that this week we were back on site, as we needed to print off our work and also just get back in and ready to start term 3 after the easter break. We did not have a theory session today and so I didn't get as much written work done as I had wanted to as we were pushed to do practical from the start all throughout the day - this was quite draining as I had nothing planned to do and I was very uninspired. I did however start to think about looks I wanted to do and fill my time with that. I went back to my face cast that we had done in the first term (discussed in blog post 1 and 2) and decided to start sculpting some lips and cheeks to create this more editorial meets dark plastic surgery look. I really focused on icons in the extreme plastic surgery world like Pete Burns and Amanda Lapore and looked at their features as well as close ups of bad lip injections where the lips were huge and started sculpting onto my face cast. I still find sculpting really tricky however, as an artist I hate being bad at something so I am working on that skill and practicing to get better at it. The other students in the class were working towards the World Skills Competition - after looking over the brief this is not a competition I want to take part in as I dislike SFX and Body Art which basically rules out my want or drive to partake in the competition. Although it limits me as an artist I prefer doing my style of makeup which is a lot more commercialised and I like to stick in my bubble as I am my worst critic and hate looking at a piece of work and it is not up to my perfected standard. I unfortunately did not get any progress photos of my clay work however I did not finish it as I had a meeting in the PM Moving onto the PM session; I had a meeting with the level 2 beauty students over at Worksop as I was doing a demo for the students showing them how to create a day look and then turn that look into a night look. As I have past experience doing demos for students and dabbling in YouTube a little; I did find it quite relaxing and easy to do a demo for the students. This was also a great opportunity to add this to my CV as work experience and also add It to my CPD log as a masterclass that I had run myself. Due to doing makeup professionally for the past 3 years; I am very well rehearsed when it comes to consolation techniques and with this you have to ensure to talk your client through the service so they are comfortable. Practicing this skill has made me super confident when applying makeup on myself and others as I know my products well and understand why I am using a certain technique, brush or product to achieve the best look. From what I could tell the students really liked the day look and also really liked the transformation to the night look. Below are the images of what look I was recreating from my L3 commercial brand assessment and then the image on myself is the recreation I did for the students.
