This week as mentioned in my previous blog post; we no longer have our theory tutor in the morning hence we made the decision as a group that we would still take that time to work on theory work and move onto practical in the afternoon. I started out by finishing all Unit 2 essay and submitting that to my tutor for formative marking before then working on Unit 27 essay a little more. Over the weekend I had gone to my grandmothers house and actually started costume construction (unit 27) however I will talk about that in more detail later on. I had also found some card in college and had decided to print off some of my butterflies for my design and start to cut them out as I had a lot of them to cut out ready for my garment. Also during this time I evaluated what portfolio work I had done in my own time for unit 27 and then realised that it might be easier to complete all my portfolio planning after finishing my costume as I had only research, health and safety and basic notes thus far. I have found this section really tricky as we do not have a textiles teacher to teach us costume design and so doing this project with no tutor support has made me struggle, however it had made me feel more independent and improve my research skills into the topic.
Moving onto practical I had found that I had mastered the making of wefts and decided to cast off my stitching and start on my human hair wefts! This was exciting but also quite nerve racking as Human hair is very expensive and I do not want to mess it up. I made sure that I had my tutors support when starting and I was fine once I started and was off. After doing this for a while I found it somewhat tedious and gave some of my time to my fellow pupil who is planning to use me as Her model for the world skills competition. I have decided not to take part in the competition as the brief requires a bald cap as well as 1 prosthetic piece and body art for the entire top half of the body. After completing majority of my CPD work I have realised and solidified that my strong areas are glam makeup as well as wigs and so this brief could not be more polar opposite of what I enjoy and what I am good at. After being measured for my friends costume I then decided to go back to cutting some butterflies to try and make more of a dent into the 1000 butterflies that needed cutting out. At this point I was feeling burnt out and a little under the weather and so I called it a day Moving onto costume construction and the work I had done over the long bank holiday weekend; I had decided that I wanted to reconstruct an Alexander McQueen garment from 2011. Although I have never made a costume before I have a fair decent amount of experience in the sewing room and so I am up for the challenge. Although it would possibly be easier to do something a little more simple for my first garment: I believe that you don’t make progress or go anywhere by being safe and so I have tasked myself with the construction of it. I have started to read the book Dressmaking Simplified by Valerie Cock and I feel I have learnt something. Also looking at old patterns that my Nan has from years ago has given me some insight into what I need to do. I started out by draping some old fabric to the body form and started to construct the panel shape by pinning the fabric down and then folding over areas that I wanted to cut off and in the mean time to ensure that they stayed there I pressed them with an iron to ensure that the crease stayed there. I carried on doing this for half of the body form (as I knew you could just invert the pattern when cutting your fabric out) and ensures that I included my darts in my pattern for the bust so that it would fit the bust of the mannequin. Please see the video below to see my progress step by step of what I created when I draped the fabric over the body form. After doing all of my panels I then unpinned them from the body form and laid it out on my pattern paper before then drawing around the basic shape and allowing 3/4 of an inch for seam allowance. I ended up completing all of this in a space of around 6 hours which I think for my first garment is a success - obviously had the help of my Grandmother who has been sewing all her life but has never made a full outfit like this hence we were learning together. At this current point in time I have got my patterns all made and pinned onto the body form but am yet to cut out my final fabric and sew all of the pieces together to make my final outfit. As mentioned earlier; please see the video below to see progress images.
