Week 29 Reflection - HNC

This week we did not have a theory session again so I decided to jump straight into practical.

Within the last week since my last blog post; I have finally finished my butterfly dress! I am so happy with my finished garment seeing as it was made significantly cheaper than the real Alexander McQueen archival piece would have cost and not to mention this is my first garment ever. I finished off the garment with some 3D butterflies at the front and also hand painting some of the white sections on the sleeves, zip seam and areas where the butterflies met and there were white sections. I feel this really pushed that high quality look that I was trying to achieve.

For the makeup I decided to pair it with this high fashion, more messy and blown out yellow eye look using golds and ochre’s to really add depth to the eye look. I ended up bringing some of the yellow up into the temples and onto the cheeks to add this full colour experience. I also added some more warmer orange tones to the cheekbones to add sculpting to the face. I do feel this makeup would have worked with the original dress as it was more yellow and orange toned however my overall final dress ended up looking more on the red side than anything else. This does definitely add some originality to the garment and makes it my own creation. I think if I were to use some more orange and red tones on the makeup however, I do think it could come off as more muddy or burnt opposed to a colour wash which is what I wanted to achieve. In terms of the lip I decided to go for a nice glossy neutral pink shade to tie in the yellow and red together but still have it look more natural.

I am so happy with the overall dress and the final look that I created! I think adding a butterfly on the shoes did add that nod to the original garment and added that extra depth. I think if I added any butterfly jewellery it would ruin the effect and would have been too much.

For the hair I decided to take inspiration from the original runway show by platting the front sections of the hair (sectioning it just behind the ears) before then setting the back of the hair in hot sticks. I did this to quickly set the hair with a natural curl before then back combing it to make this high fashion more chaotic mess of hair.

I think the images I captured really showcased the colours of not only the dress but of the makeup as well - even with some of the photos being outdoors it really showcased the reds within the dress itself. If I were to change anything I would right back to the beginning of the outfit construction and firstly dye my fabric or chose a coloured fabric before then making my base garment. I would also then make my butterfly wings bigger and make sure they were more orange/yellow toned rather than the red. I believe that this would make the outfit look even more like the original.

I hope to use this project and photos in conjunction to Unit 30 - our final unit being “fashion and editorial”.
